The Heart Behind “Clemence”

This book was inspired by an incredible little girl named Nadiya.

Nadiya was born on May 31, 2022, at BC Children’s Hospital. From the moment she arrived, she radiated a quiet strength and a bright, gentle spirit. Born with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and a heart condition called AVSD, she carried both beauty and challenge with grace far beyond her days.

On August 30, 2022, after just 90 days on Earth, Nadiya passed away.

After losing our daughter, we were overcome with grief. It was a kind of ache that words can’t express. Searching for rest, perspective, and the space to breathe again, we traveled to Quebec. It was there, exploring the streets of the picturesque place, that we found the first words of this story. We knew we wanted to honour Nadiya—not only in memory, but through something living, something that could offer comfort to other families (especially children) walking their own path of grief.

In addition to this book, we created Nadiya Clemance Centre, a childcare centre rooted in inclusion, compassion, and belonging. It is a living reflection of her legacy: a place where love leads, differences are embraced, and every child knows they matter.
